Consider the bcc unit cells of the solid 1 and 2 with the position of atoms as shown below. The radius of atom B is twice that of atom A . The unit cell edge length is 50% more in solid 2 than in 1 . What is the approximate packing efficiency in solid 2 ?

(A)90%✓ Correct
(B)75%
(C)65%
(D)45%
Answer: (A)
Solution
In solid 2 the corner atoms have radius r and the body-centre atom has radius 2r. Along the body diagonal the atoms touch, so 3a=r+2(2r)+r=6r, giving a=36r=23r. The cell holds eight corner atoms that add up to one whole atom of radius r, plus one central atom of radius 2r, so the occupied volume is 34πr3+34π(2r)3=34πr3(1+8)=12πr3. The cell volume is a3=(23r)3=243r3. The packing efficiency is 243r312πr3×100=23π×100≈90%.
