The correct statement about and is:
  1. (A) is trigonal bipyramidal and is tetrahedral
  2. (B) is square pyramidal and is square planar✓ Correct
  3. (C) is square pyramidal and is tetrahedral
  4. (D)Both are isostructural

Answer: (B)

Solution

Count the electron domains on iodine in each. In iodine has five bonding pairs and one lone pair, six domains in all, so the electrons arrange octahedrally and, with one position taken by the lone pair, the molecule is square pyramidal. In iodine has four bonding pairs and two lone pairs, again six domains; the two lone pairs take opposite axial positions, leaving the four chlorines in a plane, so the ion is square planar. So is square pyramidal and is square planar.
