In the circuit shown, a four wire potentiometer is made of a 400 cm long wire, which extends between A and B. The resistance per unit length of the potentiometer wire is r=0.01Ω/cm. If an ideal voltmeter is connected as shown with jockey J at 50 cm from end A, the expected reading of the voltmeter will be:
(A)0.75 V
(B)0.20 V
(C)0.25 V✓ Correct
(D)0.50 V
Answer: (C)
Solution
The whole potentiometer wire AB has resistance RAB=400cm×0.01Ω/cm=4Ω. With the 2Ω already in the loop, the circuit carries i=2+43V=0.5A. The voltmeter reads the drop across the stretch from A to the jockey at 50cm, whose resistance is RAJ=50cm×0.01Ω/cm=0.5Ω. So the reading is V=iRAJ=0.5A×0.5Ω=0.25V.
