A balloon is moving up in air vertically above a point A on the ground. When it is at a height h1, a girl standing at a distance d (point B) from A (see figure) sees it at the angle 450 with respect to the vertical. When the balloon climbs up a future height h2, it is seen at the angle 600 with respect to the vertical if the girl moves further by a distance 2.464 d (point C ). Then the height h2 is (given tan30∘= 0.5774):
(A)0.464 d
(B)0.732 d
(C)1.464 d
(D)d✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
The balloon stays directly above A. At first the girl is at B, a distance d from A, and her line of sight makes 45∘ with the vertical, so tan45∘=h1d and h1=d. After the balloon climbs to a height h1+h2 she has moved to C, now d+2.464d=3.464d from A, and the sight line makes 60∘ with the vertical, so tan60∘=h1+h23.464d. Since 3.464≈23 and tan60∘=3, h1+h2=323d=2d. Subtracting h1=d leaves h2=d.
