Water flows in a horizontal tube (see figure). The pressure of water changes by 700 Nm−2 between A and B where the area of cross section are 40 cm2 and 20 cm2, respectively. Find the rate of flow of water through the tube. (density of water =1000 kg m−3)
(A)1810 cm3/s
(B)2420 cm3/s
(C)2720 cm3/s✓ Correct
(D)3020 cm3/s
Answer: (C)
Solution
Continuity fixes the two speeds: AAvA=ABvB with areas 40 and 20cm2 gives vB=2vA. Bernoulli's equation for the level tube, PA−PB=21ρ(vB2−vA2), then reads 700=21(1000)(4vA2−vA2)=1500vA2, so vA=157ms−1 and vB=2157ms−1. The volume flow rate is Q=ABvB=20×10−4×2157≈2.72×10−3m3s−1, which is about 2720cm3s−1.
