Let and be the slopes of three line segments and OC , respectively, where O is origin. If circumcentre of coincides with origin and its orthocenter lies on -axis, then the value of is equal to ______.

Answer: 12

Solution

Since the circumcentre is at the origin, the vertices lie at distance from it and may be written , and , so that the slopes of , and are , and . For a triangle whose circumcentre is the origin the orthocentre is the vector sum , and its lying on the -axis makes the sum of the -coordinates vanish, so . Writing , the numerator becomes , and the second group is zero. Because , the identity valid when gives . The numerator is therefore , and dividing by leaves .
