Two cells of emf 2E and E with internal resistance r1 and r2 respectively are connected in series to an external resistor R (see figure). The value of R , at which the potential difference across the terminals of the first cell becomes zero is
(A)2r1−r2✓ Correct
(B)2r1+r2
(C)r1+r2
(D)r1−r2
Answer: (A)
Solution
For the potential difference across the first cell (emf = 2E, internal resistance = r1) to be zero:
V1=2E−Ir1=0
This gives: I=r12E
The total emf in the circuit is 2E+E=3E, and total resistance is r1+r2+R.
Current: I=r1+r2+R3E
Equating the two expressions for current:
r12E=r1+r2+R3E
2(r1+r2+R)=3r1
2r2+2R=r1
R=2r1−r2
