Two ideal electric dipoles A and B, having their dipole moment p1 and p2 respectively are placed on a plane with their centres at O as shown in the figure. At point C on the axis of dipole A, the resultant electric field is making an angle of 37∘ with the axis. The ratio of the dipole moment of A and B, p2p1 is : (take sin37∘=53)
(A)83
(B)23
(C)34
(D)32✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
At point C on the axis of dipole A, the electric field due to A is E1=kr32p1 (axial direction), and the field due to B is E2=kr3p2 (equatorial direction). The resultant makes an angle of 37∘ with the axis, so tan37∘=E1E2=2p1p2. Since tan37∘=43 (from sin37∘=53, cos37∘=54), we get 2p1p2=43, which gives p2p1=32.
