Reducing smog is a mixture of :
- (A)Smoke, fog and
- (B)Smoke, fog and
- (C)Smoke, fog and
- (D)Smoke, fog and ✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Classical smog forms over coal-burning cities in cold, damp weather. The sulphur of the fuel leaves the chimney as sulphur dioxide and is held in the water droplets of fog along with soot particles. Sulphur dioxide is itself a reducing agent, which is why this smog is called reducing, in contrast with photochemical smog whose ozone, aldehydes and peroxyacyl nitrates are oxidising. Reducing smog is a mixture of smoke, fog and sulphur dioxide.
