In the reported figure, there is a cyclic process ABCDA on a sample of 1 mol of a diatomic gas. The temperature of the gas during the process A→B and C→D are T1 and T2 (T1>T2) respectively. Choose the correct option out of the following for work done if processes BC and DA are adiabatic.
(A)WAB=WDC
(B)WAD=WBC✓ Correct
(C)WAB<WCD
(D)WBC+WDA>0
Answer: (B)
Solution
The gas is at T1 all along A→B and at T2 all along C→D, so A and B sit at T1 while C and D sit at T2. For an adiabatic change the work done equals the fall in internal energy, W=nCV(Ti−Tf), so
WA→D=nCV(T1−T2)=WB→C
The same formula gives WBC+WDA=nCV(T1−T2)+nCV(T2−T1)=0, so the two adiabatic works cancel rather than add to a positive number. On the isothermals WAB=nRT1lnVAVB is positive while WCD=nRT2lnVCVD is negative, and the ratio WAB/WDC=T1/T2=1. The relation that survives is WAD=WBC.
