Select the graph that correctly describes the adsorption isotherms at two temperatures T1 and T2(T1>T2) for a gas : ( x - mass of the gas adsorbed ; m - mass of adsorbent ; P - pressure)
(A)(see graph)✓ Correct
(B)(see graph)
(C)(see graph)
(D)(see graph)
Answer: (A)
Solution
Adsorption of a gas is exothermic, so at a fixed pressure the amount adsorbed per unit mass of adsorbent decreases as temperature rises. With T1>T2, the isotherm at T2 lies above that at T1 at every pressure, each curve climbing steeply at low pressure and then levelling towards saturation as the surface fills. The correct isotherm shows the lower-temperature curve T2 lying above the higher-temperature curve T1.
