The number of stereoisomers possible for
____
[ox = oxalate]
____
[ox = oxalate]
Answer: 3
Solution
The complex is octahedral. The two oxalate ions are bidentate and take up four coordination sites, leaving two sites for and , which can therefore be trans or cis to each other. In the trans form the two oxalate rings lie in one plane and the molecule has a plane of symmetry, so it is optically inactive. In the cis form the two oxalate rings are mutually perpendicular and the molecule has neither a plane nor a centre of symmetry, so it exists as a pair of non-superimposable mirror images. One trans isomer together with the two enantiomers of the cis isomer gives stereoisomers.
