Ceric ammonium nitrate and /alc. KOH are used for the identification of functional groups present in and respectively.
- (A)amine, phenol
- (B)alcohol, phenol
- (C)amine, alcohol
- (D)alcohol, amine✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Ceric ammonium nitrate reacts with an alcohol by replacing a nitrate ligand of the cerium(IV) complex with the alkoxide group, and the yellow reagent turns red, so it tests for the hydroxyl group of an alcohol. Chloroform with alcoholic generates dichlorocarbene, which attacks a primary amine to give an isocyanide of extremely offensive smell; this carbylamine test is given by primary amines alone. The two reagents identify alcohol and amine respectively.
