A rod CD of thermal resistance 10.0KW−1 is joined at the middle of an identical rod AB as shown in figure. The end A, B and D are maintained at 200∘C, 100∘C and 125∘C respectively. The heat current in CD is P watt. The value of P is ______.
Answer: 2
Solution
Since AB is identical to CD, its full thermal resistance is 10KW−1 and each half, AC and CB, has resistance 5KW−1. Let the junction C be at temperature TC. Conservation of heat current at C gives
5200−TC=5TC−100+10TC−125.
Multiplying through by 10 yields 2(200−TC)=2(TC−100)+(TC−125), so 725=5TC and TC=145∘C. The heat current in CD is
P=10TC−125=10145−125=2W.
