Given below are two statements:
Statement I: A mixture of chloroform and aniline can be separated by simple distillation.
Statement II: When separating aniline from a mixture of aniline and water by steam distillation aniline boils below its boiling point.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Statement II: When separating aniline from a mixture of aniline and water by steam distillation aniline boils below its boiling point.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
- (A)Both Statement I and Statement II are true✓ Correct
- (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- (C)Statement I is false but statement II is true
- (D)Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Answer: (A)
Solution
Chloroform boils at K and aniline at K. Two liquids whose boiling points are this far apart separate cleanly in a simple distillation, the chloroform passing over first, so Statement I is true.
In steam distillation two immiscible liquids boil together when the sum of their separate vapour pressures reaches the atmospheric pressure. Each liquid supplies only a part of that pressure, so the mixture distils a little below K, far under the normal boiling point of aniline, and the aniline comes over with the steam without being heated to K. Statement II is true.
Both Statement I and Statement II are true.

Both Statement I and Statement II are true.
