Let such that and be any arbitrary function. Which of the following statements is NOT true ?
  1. (A)If is one-one, then is one-one
  2. (B) is one-one
  3. (C)If is onto, then is one-one✓ Correct
  4. (D)If is onto, then

Answer: (C)

Solution

The recurrence gives , so with . Such an is one-one, and if it is also onto then has to be a value, which forces and . Since is injective, is one-one whenever is, and conversely gives and hence , so being one-one forces to be one-one. A surjection of onto itself need not be injective: with for is onto, and then takes the same value at and . The statement that is not true is that if is onto, then is one-one.
