Which one of the following reactions will not yield propionic acid?
- (A) dry ether ✓ Correct
- (B) (Heat),
- (C)
- (D)
Answer: (A)
Solution
Carbonation of a Grignard reagent adds one carbon: -bromopropane gives propylmagnesium bromide, which with and acid yields butanoic acid, a four-carbon acid, not propionic acid. Oxidation of propane, hydrolysis of -trichloropropane and the haloform reaction of butan--one each keep the three-carbon framework and do give propionic acid. The route that fails to give propionic acid is the Grignard carbonation of -bromopropane.
