In Carius method, halogen containing organic compound is heated with fuming nitric acid in the presence of:
- (A)✓ Correct
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)
Answer: (A)
Solution
In the Carius estimation the organic compound is sealed in a hard glass tube with fuming nitric acid and silver nitrate and heated. The nitric acid oxidises the organic matter completely and sets the halogen free as halide ion, which the silver nitrate precipitates at once as silver halide; the precipitate is washed, dried and weighed, and the halogen content follows from its mass. The substance heated with fuming nitric acid is silver nitrate.
