Bakelite is a cross- linked polymer of formaldehyde and :
  1. (A)PHBV
  2. (B)Buna - S
  3. (C)Novolac✓ Correct
  4. (D)Dacron

Answer: (C)

Solution

Phenol and formaldehyde condense under acid control into a linear chain in which the rings are joined through bridges; this chain of low molecular mass is novolac. Heating novolac with more formaldehyde bridges the ortho and para positions that are still free, so the separate chains become tied into a rigid three dimensional network, and that network is bakelite. The polymer cross-linked with formaldehyde to give bakelite is novolac.
