Given below are two statements:
Statement I: The value of the parameter " Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)' is important for survival of aquatic life.
Statement II : The optimum value of BOD is 6.5 ppm .
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
  1. (A)Both statement I and Statement II are false
  2. (B)Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. (C)Statement I is true but Statement II is false✓ Correct
  4. (D)Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Answer: (C)

Solution

Biochemical oxygen demand is the amount of dissolved oxygen that micro-organisms consume while breaking down the organic matter in a water sample, so it measures how much oxygen is left for fish and other aquatic organisms, and a high value starves them; Statement I is true. Clean water has a BOD below ppm while heavily polluted water reaches ppm or more, so ppm is not an optimum value of BOD; Statement II is false. Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
