In polymer Buna - S: 'S' stands for:
  1. (A)Sulphonation
  2. (B)Strength
  3. (C)Sulphur
  4. (D)Styrene✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

The Buna rubbers are named from the monomer that forms the backbone and the sodium catalyst used to polymerise it, so Bu comes from butadiene and Na from sodium. Buna-S is made by copolymerising -butadiene with a second monomer, and that comonomer is styrene, whose phenyl rings stiffen the chain and make the rubber harder and more abrasion-resistant than natural rubber. In Buna-S the letter S therefore stands for styrene.
