A circular hole of radius (2a) is cut of a circular disc of radius 'a' as shown in figure. The centroid of the remaining circular portion with respect to point 'O' will be:
(A)65a✓ Correct
(B)61a
(C)1110a
(D)32a
Answer: (A)
Solution
Measure x from O, which lies on the rim of the complete disc, so the centre of that disc is at x=a. The hole of radius 2a touches the disc centre on one side and the rim on the other, so its centre is at x=23a. With a uniform sheet the masses go as the areas, M1∝a2 for the full disc and M2∝4a2 for the piece removed. Treating the hole as negative mass,
xcm=a2−4a2a2(a)−4a2(23a)=43a2a3−83a3=65a
The centroid of the remaining portion lies at 65a from O.
