At time t=0, a material is composed of two radioactive atoms A and B, where NA(0)=2NB(0). The decay constant of both kind of radioactive atoms is λ. However, A disintegrates to B and B disintegrates to C. Which of the following figures represents the evolution of NB(t)/NB(0) with respect to time t ?
[NA(0)= No. of A atomsat t=0NB(0)= No. of Batomsat t=0]
(A)(see structure)✓ Correct
(B)(see structure)
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (A)
Solution
A only decays, so NA(t)=NA(0)e−λt=2NB(0)e−λt. B is fed by A and decays with the same constant:
dtdNB=λNA−λNB=2λNB(0)e−λt−λNB
Putting u=NBeλt reduces this to dtdu=2λNB(0), so u=NB(0)(1+2λt) and
NB(0)NB(t)=(1+2λt)e−λt
Its derivative is λe−λt(1−2λt), which vanishes at t=2λ1. The required curve therefore starts at the value 1, rises to a maximum of 2e−1/2≈1.21 at t=2λ1, and then falls away to zero.
