The polymer formed on heating Novolac with formaldehyde is :
  1. (A)Polyester
  2. (B)Bakelite✓ Correct
  3. (C)Nylon 6,6
  4. (D)Melamine

Answer: (B)

Solution

Novolac is the linear phenol-formaldehyde prepolymer made under acidic conditions, in which phenol rings are joined by bridges while ortho and para positions on many rings are still free. Heating it with more formaldehyde converts those free positions into further methylene bridges between neighbouring chains, so the linear chains are cross-linked into a rigid three-dimensional network. The polymer so obtained is bakelite.
