In an experment ot verify Newton's law of cooling, a graph is plotted between, the temperature difference (ΔT) of the water and surroundings and time as shown in figure. The initial temperature of water is taken as 80∘C. The value of t2 as mentioned in the graph will be ____.
Answer: 16
Solution
Newton's law of cooling: T−T0=(Ti−T0)e−kt, where T0 is the surrounding temperature. From the graph, at t=0: ΔT=60 (so T0=20∘C). At t=6 min: ΔT=40, giving 40=60e−6k, so e−6k=2/3 and 6k=ln(3/2)=ln1.5. At t=t2: ΔT=20, giving 20=60e−kt2, so e−kt2=1/3 and kt2=ln3. Therefore, 6t2=ln1.5ln3=ln3−ln2ln3≈2.71, giving t2≈16.25≈16 min.
