A girl standing on road holds her umbrella at 45∘ with the vertical to keep the rain away. If she starts running without umbrella with a speed of 152kmh−1, the rain drops hit her head vertically. The speed of rain drops with respect to the moving girl is :
(A)30kmh−1
(B)225kmh−1
(C)230kmh−1✓ Correct
(D)25kmh−1
Answer: (C)
Solution
While the girl stands still, the umbrella held at 45∘ to the vertical shows the rain reaching the ground at 45∘, so the horizontal and vertical components of the rain's velocity are equal in magnitude. When she then runs and the rain appears to fall straight down, her own speed must exactly cancel the horizontal component of the rain, so that horizontal component equals her running speed 152kmh−1; by the equality of the two components the vertical component is also 152kmh−1. Relative to the running girl the horizontal motion has vanished and only the vertical part remains, so the rain's speed with respect to her is 152=230kmh−1.
