The number of carbon atoms present in the product B is ____.
Answer: 1
Solution
Fermentation of glucose by zymase gives ethanol, so A is CH3CH2OH. Treatment with sodium hypoiodite (NaOI) is the iodoform reaction: the CH3CH(OH)− unit of ethanol, equivalently its oxidation product acetaldehyde CH3CHO, is cleaved so that the methyl carbon leaves as iodoform CHI3. The remaining carbon departs as the carboxylate, and because acetaldehyde carries only hydrogen on the other side, that carboxylate is formate, HCOO−Na+. Sodium formate holds a single carbon atom, so product B contains 1 carbon.
