From the base of a pole of height 20 meter, the angle of elevation of the top of a tower is 60∘. The pole subtends an angle 30∘ at the top of the tower. Then the height of the tower is:
(A)153
(B)203
(C)20+103
(D)30✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Let the tower have height h and let the horizontal distance from the pole to the tower be d.
From the base of the pole, the angle of elevation to the top of the tower is 60∘:
tan60∘=dh⇒d=3h
The pole (height 20 m) subtends an angle 30∘ at the top of the tower. Using the geometry:
tan30∘=d20=h/320=h203
But also, from the triangle at the top of the tower:
tan30∘=31=dh−20
Substituting d=3h:
31=h/3h−20=h3(h−20)
Solving: h=3(h−20)⇒h=3h−60⇒2h=60⇒h=30 meters.
