Match List-I with List-II. List-I (Species): (A) BrF₅ (B) [CrF₆]³⁻ (C) O₃ (D) PCl₅ List-II (Shape): (I) bent (II) square pyramidal (III) trigonal bipyramidal (IV) octahedral Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer: A → II, B → IV, C → I, D → III
Solution
Applying VSEPR to each species fixes its shape. In BrF5 bromine has five bond pairs and one lone pair, an AX5E arrangement, which is square pyramidal. The ion [CrF6]3− is a six-coordinate chromium(III) centre and is octahedral. Ozone, O3, has a central oxygen with one lone pair and two bonding regions, so it is bent. In PCl5 phosphorus has five bond pairs and no lone pair, an AX5 arrangement, so it is trigonal bipyramidal. The species therefore pair with square pyramidal, octahedral, bent and trigonal bipyramidal in turn. Note that it is BrF5, not the square-planar ion [BrF4]−, that is square pyramidal.
