A battery of 6 V is connected to the circuit as shown below. The current I drawn from the battery is :

Solution

The circuit forms a balanced Wheatstone bridge, so no current flows through the 5 Ω resistor. It can be removed. The remaining circuit has two parallel branches: 6 Ω and 12 Ω in parallel, plus 2 Ω in series. The equivalent resistance is

R_{eq} = \frac{6 \times 12}{6 + 12} + 2 = 4 + 2 = 6

Ω. The current is

I = \frac{V}{R _{eq}} = \frac{6}{6} = 1
