Given below are two statements :
Statement I: Sulphanilic acid gives esterification test for carboxyl group.
Statement II : Sulphanilic acid gives red colour in
Lassigne's test for extra element detection.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. (A)Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
  2. (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
  3. (C)Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
  4. (D)Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Sulphanilic acid is -aminobenzenesulphonic acid, . It carries a sulphonic acid group and no carboxyl group, so it cannot give the esterification test that is characteristic of ; the first statement is therefore wrong. The molecule does contain both nitrogen and sulphur, and in Lassaigne's test these combine to form sodium thiocyanate, which gives a blood-red colouration with iron(III) ions and confirms the extra elements; the second statement is correct. Hence the first statement is incorrect while the second statement is correct.
