Correct order of spin only magnetic moment of the following complex ions is: (Given At. No. Fe: 26, Co:27)
(A)[FeF6]3−>[CoF6]3−>[Co(C2O4)3]3−✓ Correct
(B)[Co(C2O4)3]3−>[CoF6]3−>[FeF6]3−
(C)[FeF6]3−>[Co(C2O4)3]3−>[CoF6]3−
(D)[CoF6]3−>[FeF6]3−>[Co(C2O4)3]3−
Answer: (A)
Solution
In [FeFX6]3− the iron(III) centre is d5 and fluoride is a weak-field ligand, so the complex is high-spin with five unpaired electrons and the largest spin-only moment, 35 BM. In [CoFX6]3− the cobalt(III) centre is d6 and again the weak-field fluoride leaves a high-spin arrangement, now with four unpaired electrons, 24 BM. In [Co(CX2OX4)X3]3− the same d6 cobalt(III) is surrounded by the stronger-field oxalate, which pairs the electrons completely to give a low-spin configuration with no unpaired electrons and zero moment. The spin-only magnetic moments therefore decrease in the order [FeFX6]3−>[CoFX6]3−>[Co(CX2OX4)X3]3−.
