Identify the correct order for the given property for following compounds (A) Boiling Point: (see structures) (B) Density: (see structure) (C) Boiling Point: (see structure) (D) Density: (see structures) (E) Boiling Point: (see structure)
Choose the correct answer from the option given below :-A1A2A3BCD1D2E
(A)(B), (C) and (D) only
(B)(A), (C) and (E) only✓ Correct
(C)(A), (C) and (D) only
(D)(A), (B) and (E) only
Answer: (B)
Solution
For the haloalkanes the boiling point climbs as the carbon chain lengthens, because the larger surface raises the dispersion forces; it also climbs, for a fixed alkyl group, as the halogen grows heavier from chlorine to iodine; and it falls as the chain becomes more branched, since a compact molecule meets its neighbours over a smaller area. The three boiling-point sequences follow exactly these trends and are right, whereas the two density sequences run against the real trend, in which density rises with the mass of the halogen and of the molecule. The correct orders are the three labelled (A), (C) and (E).
