Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R:
Assertion A: Acetal/Ketal is stable in basic medium.
Reason R: The high leaving tendency of alkoxide ion gives the stability to acetal/ketal in basic medium.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Assertion A: Acetal/Ketal is stable in basic medium.
Reason R: The high leaving tendency of alkoxide ion gives the stability to acetal/ketal in basic medium.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- (A)A is true but R is false✓ Correct
- (B)A is false but R is true
- (C)Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
- (D)Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
Answer: (A)
Solution
Acetals and ketals are gem-diethers formed from carbonyl compounds, and like ordinary ethers they are untouched by base, being hydrolysed back to the carbonyl compound only under acid. The assertion that they are stable in basic medium is thus true. The reason given is false, because an alkoxide ion is strongly basic and a poor leaving group, and it is exactly this reluctance of alkoxide to leave in base that gives the stability. The assertion is correct while the reason is false.
