Given below are two statements :

Statement I :

under Clemmensen reduction conditions will give HOOC .

Statement II :

under Wolff-Kishner reduction condition will give

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. (A)Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  2. (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. (C)Statement I is true but Statement II is false✓ Correct
  4. (D)Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Answer: (C)

Solution

Under Clemmensen conditions zinc amalgam with concentrated hydrochloric acid reduces the ketone carbonyl to a methylene group, and in the strongly acidic aqueous medium the amide end is hydrolysed to a carboxylic acid, so the keto-amide is carried through to pentanoic acid; the first statement is true. Wolff-Kishner conditions use hydrazine with base, and the chlorine on the carbon next to the carbonyl is lost by elimination in this strongly basic medium, so instead of a clean reduction to the methylene compound an alkene results; the second statement is false. Thus the first statement is true while the second is false.
