As shown in the figure, a long straight conductor with semicircular arc of radius 10π m is carrying current I=3 A. The magnitude of the magnetic field at the center O of the arc is: (The permeability of the vacuum =4π×10−7 NA−2)
(A)6μT
(B)1μT
(C)4μT
(D)3μT✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Each straight part of the conductor lies along the line passing through the centre O, and a straight wire produces no magnetic field at points on its own line, so only the semicircular arc contributes at O. A full circular loop gives 2Rμ0I at its centre, and a semicircle, being half of it, gives B=4Rμ0I. Substituting I=3 A and R=10π m, B=4×10π(4π×10−7)(3)=4π4π×10−7×3×10=3×10−6 T. The magnetic field at the centre is 3μT.
