The pressure of a gas changes linearly with volume from A to B as shown in figure. If no heat is supplied to or extracted from the gas then change in the internal energy of the gas will be
(A)6 J
(B)Zero
(C)-4.5 J
(D)4.5 J✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
With no heat exchanged, Q=0, the first law Q=ΔU+W reduces to ΔU=−W, where W is the work done by the gas. The gas moves from A at (200cc,10kPa) to B at (50cc,50kPa), so its volume shrinks and the work done by it is negative. The magnitude of that work is the area of the trapezium under the straight line, 21(PA+PB)∣ΔV∣=21(10+50)×103×150×10−6=4.5 J, so W=−4.5 J. The change in internal energy is therefore ΔU=−W=+4.5 J.
