A horse rider covers half the distance with 5m/s speed. The remaining part of the distance was travelled with speed 10m/s for half the time and with speed 15m/s for other half of the time. The mean speed of the rider averaged over the whole time of motion is x/7m/s. The value of x is
Answer: 50
Solution
Let the whole path be 2x. The first half x is ridden at 5m/s in time 5x. In the second half the two equal time intervals at 10m/s and 15m/s cover x=(210+15)t=225t, so that stretch takes t=252x. The total time is 5x+252x=257x, and the mean speed is 7x/252x=750m/s. Hence x=50.
