Two isolated metallic solid spheres of radii R and 2R are charged such that both have same charge density σ. The spheres are then connected by a thin conducting wire. If the new charge density of the bigger sphere is σ′. The ratio σσ′ is :
(A)49
(B)34
(C)35
(D)65✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Before contact each sphere carries Q=σ⋅4πr2, so Q1=4πR2σ and Q2=16πR2σ, a total of 20πR2σ. Joining the spheres by a wire brings them to a common potential, RQ1′=2RQ2′, i.e. Q2′=2Q1′, so charge conservation gives Q2′=340πR2σ. The new density on the larger sphere is σ′=4π(2R)2Q2′=65σ, hence σσ′=65.
