The urns A, B and C contain 4 red, 6 black; 5 red, 5 black and λ red, 4 black balls respectively. One of the urns is selected at random and a ball is drawn. If the ball drawn is red and the probability that it is drawn from urn C is 0.4 then the square of the length of the side of the largest equilateral triangle, inscribed in the parabola y2=λx with one vertex at the vertex of the parabola is
Answer: 432
Solution
With equal probability 31 of selecting each urn, Bayes' theorem gives P(C∣R)=104+105+λ+4λλ+4λ=0.4. Writing u=λ+4λ, this is 0.4=0.9+uu, so u=0.6 and λ=6. The parabola is then y2=6x. An equilateral triangle with one vertex at the origin and the opposite side perpendicular to the axis has its other vertices at (6y02,±y0); the 30∘ half-angle at the origin gives tan30∘=y02/6y0=y06, so y0=63 and 6y02=18. The side is the distance from the origin to (18,63), whose square is 182+(63)2=324+108=432. The square of the side length is 432.
