Let σ be the uniform surface charge density of two infinite thin plane sheets shown in figure. Then the electric fields in three different region EI, EII and EIII are:
(A)EI=ϵ02σn^,EII=0,EIII=ϵ02σn^
(B)EI=0,EII=ϵ0σn^,EIII=0
(C)EI=2ϵ0σn^,EII=0,EIII=2ϵ0σn^
(D)EI=−ϵ0σn^,EII=0,EIII=ϵ0σn^✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Each infinite sheet of surface charge density σ sets up a field of magnitude 2ϵ0σ on either side, pointing away from the sheet. Both sheets here carry +σ. Between them the two fields point towards each other and cancel, so EII=0. To the left both fields point away to the left, adding to ϵ0σ along −n^, and to the right both point away to the right, adding to ϵ0σ along +n^. Hence EI=−ϵ0σn^, EII=0 and EIII=ϵ0σn^.
