Given below are two statements:
Statement-I: Acceleration due to gravity is different at different places on the surface of earth.
Statement-II: Acceleration due to gravity increases as we go down below the earth's surface.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
  1. (A)Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. (C)Statement I is true but Statement II is false✓ Correct
  4. (D)Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer: (C)

Solution

The value of at the surface changes from place to place: it grows from the equator to the poles because of the earth's rotation and its equatorial bulge, and it also alters with altitude and local terrain, so the first statement is correct. Below the surface only the inner sphere of radius attracts the body, giving , which falls steadily with depth and vanishes at the centre. Gravity therefore does not increase on going down, so the second statement is false. The first statement is true while the second is false.
