a) Give chemical tests to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds:
i) ethanol and propanal ii) phenol and benzoic acid

Give the complete reaction in each case.

Solution

(a)(i) Propanal gives the silver mirror with Tollens'; ethanol does not (ethanol + Na → H).
(ii) Benzoic acid: CO with NaHCO; phenol: violet FeCl.
