Explain the mechanism of nucleophilic addition to a carbonyl group and give one example of such an addition reaction.
Solution
Mechanism:
- The nucleophile attacks the electrophilic carbonyl carbon perpendicular to the plane; the π-pair shifts onto O — a tetrahedral (sp) alkoxide forms.
- Protonation of the alkoxide gives the product.
