i) Give one example each of acetals and oximes.
ii) Why is benzoic acid stronger than acetic acid?
ii) Why is benzoic acid stronger than acetic acid?
Solution
(i) Acetal — from an aldehyde + 2 ROH: 1,1-diethoxyethane, CHCH(OCH).
Oxime — from a carbonyl + NHOH: acetaldoxime, CHCH=NOH.
(ii) The phenyl's sp carbon pulls electrons (−I) and helps disperse the benzoate's charge, while acetic acid's methyl (+I) concentrates it — so CHCOOH is the stronger acid (K 6.3×10 vs 1.8×10).
