Account for the following:
i) Ethers possess a dipole moment even if the alkyl radicals in the molecule are identical.
ii) Sodium bisulphite is used for the purification of aldehydes and ketones.
i) Ethers possess a dipole moment even if the alkyl radicals in the molecule are identical.
ii) Sodium bisulphite is used for the purification of aldehydes and ketones.
Solution
(i) R–O–R is angular (≈110°): the two C–O bond moments add vectorially to a non-zero resultant, so even dimethyl ether has μ ≈ 1.18 D.
(ii) Carbonyl compounds add NaHSO to give crystalline bisulphite compounds:
The solid is filtered, washed, and the pure carbonyl regenerated with dilute acid or alkali.
