i) For the complex [Fe(CN)], write the hybridisation, magnetic character and spin type of the complex. (Atomic number: Fe = 26)
ii) Draw one of the geometrical isomers of the complex [Co(en)Cl] which is optically active.

Solution

(i) Fe = 3d; CN (strong field) pairs all six electrons: hybridisation \textbf{dsp}, \textbf{diamagnetic}, \textbf{low-spin} (inner-orbital) complex.
(ii) The \textbf{cis-isomer} of [Co(en)Cl] — two Cl on adjacent vertices with the en rings spanning the rest — has no plane of symmetry and exists as d/l enantiomers; draw the octahedron with adjacent Cl's (the trans form is inactive).
