Explain the terms, giving a suitable example in each case:
i) ambident ligand
ii) denticity of a ligand
iii) crystal field splitting in an octahedral field
i) ambident ligand
ii) denticity of a ligand
iii) crystal field splitting in an octahedral field
Solution
(i) Ambident(ate) ligand — possesses two different donor atoms and binds through either one: NO (through N as nitrito-N, or O as nitrito-O), SCN.
(ii) Denticity — the number of donor atoms through which a ligand attaches to one metal ion: HO is monodentate (1), en is bidentate (2), EDTA is hexadentate (6).
(iii) Crystal field splitting (octahedral): the six ligands raise the energy of the d-orbitals unequally — d, d (e, pointing at ligands) rise while d, d, d (t) fall; the separation is Δ. Example: the colour of [Ti(HO)] from its t→e transition.
