a) What are ambidentate ligands? Give an example.
b) Write the IUPAC names of the following:
i) K[Fe(CO)] ii) [Pt(NH)]Cl
c) Draw the structure of the cis-isomer of [Co(NH)Cl].

Solution

(a) An ambidentate ligand possesses two different donor atoms but uses only one of them at a time — e.g. NO (through N or O), SCN (through S or N).
(b)(i) \textbf{Potassium trioxalatoferrate(III)}
(ii) \textbf{Hexaammineplatinum(IV) chloride}
(c) \textit{cis}-[Co(NH)Cl]: octahedral Co(III) with the two Cl on adjacent (90°) vertices and the four NH at the other four corners.
