a) Name two main factors that favour a metal ion forming a complex.
b) Give an example of an industrial application of the formation of a coordination complex.
c) Write the IUPAC name of [Co(en)Cl(ONO)].

Solution

(a) Complex formation is favoured by:
  1. a high charge-to-size ratio of the metal ion (small, highly charged ions attract ligands strongly);
  2. vacant orbitals of suitable energy (the (n−1)d orbitals) to accept ligand lone pairs.
(b) Industrial application: extraction of gold and silver — the metal is leached with NaCN as the soluble complex [Au(CN)] and then displaced by zinc (hydrometallurgy).
(c) Alphabetical order (chlorido, ethane-1,2-diamine, nitrito-O); (−1)+(−1)+x = +1 ⇒ Co(III):
\textbf{chloridobis(ethane-1,2-diamine)nitrito-O-cobalt(III) ion}
